Reverse Osmosis System – In Dry Dock or at Sea
A ship’s existing seawater treatment system needed to be modernized. The previous evaporator was to be replaced by a reverse osmosis system – the new technology had to fit into the footprint of the old system. This was a challenge, as the installation had to be planned precisely to ensure that everything worked in the designated space.
The installation area first had to be prepared – both statically as well as in terms of infrastructure. A special requirement was that the installation should be possible either in dry dock or at sea, depending on the available time frame.
The replacement involved not just a single unit, but an entire system: from pre-filtration and high-pressure technology and post-treatment. All components had to be brought on board and installed in tight spaces – with as little disruption as possible to ongoing ship operations.
Additionally, logistical preparation was required: To reduce assembly time, as many system parts as possible needed to be pre-installed and tested in advance.
The implementation began with the pre-installation of the reverse osmosis components on land. These were assembled, tested, and then disassembled for transportation. On board, the installation was carried out in clearly defined individual steps:
This modular approach allowed the system to be installed efficiently and adapted precisely to the conditions on board – regardless of whether the work was carried out in dry dock or at sea.
The transition to reverse osmosis went according to plan. The new system was installed and put into operation within the specified time frame. The modular approach enabled a safe and efficient implementation under real conditions on board. The vessel is now equipped with a modern, easy-to-maintain energy-efficient water treatment system.
